July 20: Senior Prelims

This afternoon was the league Senior (13 & Up) preliminaries.  It was at Mercer Island Beach Club, and as you can tell, the pool is right at the edge of the beach.  It's a beautiful spot.  Eldon (white cap, center of picture) competed in the 100 individual medley and 100 freestyle.  He was seeded 2nd in both events, but took 1st in both, breaking two Woodridge records in the process (the IM record was his from earlier in the season but the 100 free record was from 1996).  Did I say "breaking?"  I meant to say "SHATTERING."  Woodridge overall had a great day.  All 5 of our senior swimmers are returning for finals on Saturday.  We're all so excited!

As we were riding home from the meet, Eldon told me how the other club (year-round) swimmers who had also been in the race were talking to him as they cooled down after the IM and couldn't believe he had just done a 55.01.  He said it was really awesome to be getting props from the club swimmers.  I reminded him that he is a club swimmer, too.  :-)  He also said he doesn't know how to swim in a big meet as the #1 seed.  He's always come from behind as a #2 or #3 seed.  I, however, have no doubt that he will know just what to do to hold his seed on Saturday.  He is 1.5 seconds ahead of the 2nd seed in the IM and about the same ahead of 2nd seed (a high school teammate) in the free.
